Important Announcements
The upcoming retreat is scheduled for Sept. 19-20, 2008. It will be in the fellowship hall of the Methodist Church in Farmington. Friday afternoon will be UFO night (unfinished object), games, and pajama party. Participants may stay overnight but they don't have to. Saturday is workshop day with a couple to choose from. Bring your own snacks and refreshments. There is no cost to members. If you want to participate in a class, you will have to find out ahead of time what supply you will need to buy. Lists of supplies are on the guild website Threadsoffriendship.bravehost.com/supplies.html and are also available from each of the teachers. Carol will be teaching a quilted purse class. Phyllis will be teaching the “call me” quilt technique. Nancy will be teaching the “Stack n Whack” design.
The product of the month for September to give to the Senior Center is Give a bag of sugar and receive a piece for your participation block. If you don't know or can't remember what the product of the month is for a particular month, you can always give something else as a donation and still receive a participation piece. Past product of the months have been: salad dressing, paper towels, wash cloths and dish towels, flour, and pasta. You may also give cash to Barbara Viitenen, and she will buy the items.
Also, the Senior Center is having a Chicken and Dumpling dinner Saturday, September 6 from 11:00am to 2:00pm. The cost will be $6.00 for each adult and $3.00 for children under age 12. The dinner is sponsored by Modern Woodmen Financial.
Remember your secret quilter friend! Bring your gifts and cards in a plain bags. Print your friend's name on the bag. Gifts will be distributed during the meeting.
Advantages to doing Block of the Month....
I would like to share my feeling about Block of the Month:
-
Block of the month gives me a chance to sew with few colors or fabrics
-
Block of month gives me a chance to try harder to sew to the perfect 1/4 inch
-
Block of the month stretches me to aim at perfection of a skill
-
Block of the month introduces me to new techniques and trains me in a way that is "hands on!"
Won't you try to participate in our Block of the Month activities? Yours, Lori Younker, treasurer
Sixteen members signed up for the Quilt As You Go Workshop that was originally scheduled for February but due to bad weather was re-scheduled for April 26. Unfortunately, that was not a great date for 10 members who signed up for the class. Phyllis is going to offer at least one make-up session and needs the in-put of those who had signed up. If you want a Saturday, October 18 and/or 25th will work for her. If not on Saturday, would you like the make-up workshop to be on a weekday afternoon or evening? By the September meeting (September 9), please let her know when you would like to re-schedule the workshop . Questions? Call her at 756-2427 or 760-5321 or email at phyllis.quilts@hotmail.com.
Thanks, Phyllis
Aug.12, 2008 TOFQG Minutes
The meeting was called to order at 6:30 by Pres. Nancy Medley. 40 members and 5 visitors were in attendance.
Judy Carriere announced there are nine new books in the library. She also made a block using a pattern from "Country Christmas Quilts". She will finish the block and donate it to be sold at the Nov. craft fair.
The membership was reminded that when/if there is an address (or e-address) change to let Kay King know so she can up date the information. Kay will have the new lists ready for the September meeting.
The membership talked about sales at quilt shops and upcoming events. Martha Smith is looking for someone to go with her to the Houston quilt show the end of October.
A motion passed that the guild donate $600.00 to the Senior Center for the use of their center throughout the year. The Modern Woodmen of America will match our donation. The Center is having a Chicken & Dumpling Dinner Sat. Sept. 6, 2008 11:00am to 2:00pm.
The minutes were approved and the treasurer's report given.
Nancy reminded the membership to be working on items for the St. Joe's Craft Fair. The Fair will be on Nov 15. Ginny Ward is looking for some help with the pricing of the items. The profits from the Craft Fair will raise money for the guild treasury.
A motion passed to have “A Friend's Place”, the women's abuse shelter, as the guild's charity for the year. If you donate a quilt, you may request that the quilt stay at the shelter. Otherwise, quilts are given to the women and children as they leave to their new home. The shelter has twin size and crib size beds, but they accept quilts of all sizes. It was mentioned that personal care items (soap, shampoo, combs, feminine items, etc) are also needed. Bobbie Christopher and Marlene Johnston volunteered to deliver any items to the shelter. Thank you ladies.
The Charter Member quilt top will be on display at the reception in October. There were a couple ideas submitted for the Charter Quilt center. All members, past and present , are invited to the reception in October. We need signatures in the hopes a getting all the blocks signed. Refreshments will be provided by the guild executives.
Phyllis Hargis handed out questionnaires regarding the quilters circles. It was stated that members may change circles if they want to . [Results of the questionnaires were recorded. A few changes were made. The friendship groups have been reorganized.]
Nancy asked if there are any red and blue participation blocks still out there. Even if the block isn't completed, please return them. Someone else can finish the blocks. We are trying to put the quilt red, white, and blue quilt together.
The drawings went to : 50/50 to Judy Carriere, block of the month to Barbara Viitanen and Lori Younker, door prize to Judy Carriere, and fat quarters to Verna Young. “Quilter's Choice” went to Mary Beth Parish. Congrats to all.
It was decided that the fat quarter collection for September will be "fall colors." Remember you must bring fat quarters to be eligible for the drawing.
For the previous “Quilter's Choice” drawing, Diana asked us to do some paper piecing in 30's fabric for her. Next month we will return the paper piecing to Diana. Mary Beth will tell us what her choice is for the month of October. Out of those who participate, a new winner will be drawn next month.
The last item on the agenda was program. Carol Carney (of the Stasher Sisters) explained and demonstrated "Bobbin Work". By using different weight threads or some metallics threads and working from the back of your project, you may get some very interesting surface designs on your quilts and clothing.
