Quilt Shop In Review -- October 2007
Cobblestone Cupboard
A 3-Star Quilt Shop Friend
Hi from Cobblestone Cupboard.
First off, we are happy to welcome the new guild to our South. We like to come to Farmington every few weeks anyway... we love BarBQ Warehouse. Still fond of Cat Fish Kettle, but since BBQ W added good home cooked style cat fish, we are going there the most.
I’m sure most of you know us, but in case you’re not too familiar here’s a brief description. We are a very full service quilt shop, meaning we have too much of everything. We offer everything -- from thousand’s of bolts of designer cotton to quilting and sewing notions, from quilting books & patterns including original and other local artists to Bernina & Elna sewing and embroidery machines & sergers, and from carrying a large variety of embroidery supplies to loads of classes. To top it all off, we even have custom machine quilting service.
Carol is the expert, having quilted for over 20 years to stitching and sewed for at least - never mind, she might get mad, but trust me, quite a while. I’m Bert and I can sew but I believe speed counts more than pickiness, so I am only allowed to sew out some of my own design trials now and then. I do the freehand machine quilting, however, and usually find it somewhat relaxing. I do all the computer stuff including embroidery software, but my real passion is cooking so I will talk cooking anytime. My latest creation is broiled Tilapia with what I call Pinto Bean salsa (but not Mexican, just my take). Very yummy!
We have a number of amazing helpers – all with different passions and talents: teaching, quilting, machine quilting, embroidery, and helpfulness. Truthfully, they all pick on me (Bert) too much but I’m thick skinned.
Stop by, call, eMail, or whatever. We love company.
Bert & Carol Carney

Minutes from September 11, 2007
President Phyllis Hargis called the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m. and welcomed everyone in attendance. There were 36 members present and 7 visitors. Phyllis introduced Allison Hensley. Allison marched us all outside for our Charter Member photo.
Phyllis reminded us about the 50/50 drawing and the raffle which will take place next month. You will still be able to buy tickets for a Christmas craft kit at 50 cents per ticket or three for a dollar.
Show and Tell had many participating, showing off quilts of all sizes. They were, Bobbie Christopher, Barbara Viitanen, Lori Younker and daughter Joanna Younker, Joyce White, Loretta Smith, Sandy Todd, Phyllis Hargis, Naomi Hulsey and Phyllis Vandergriff. Phyllis Vandergriff also showed us her book which is for sale at Quilter’s Corner in Potosi; she also showed us an article featuring her work in Quick Quilts magazine. Cris Sumski, Loretta Smith, Phyllis Hargis and Saphrona Brewington each showed off the purse they made at the Purse workshop.
TOFQG is now 57 members strong. September is the last month to join and receive charter member status. In order to be a member you must be at least 14 years of age. You can visit two times, but must join by the 3rd visit. We had several new members join tonight including Carol Hunter, Ginny Ward, Joanna Younker, Sandra Henderson and Claudia Weiss.
The minutes and treasurer’s report were passed and approved.
Barbara Viitanen, has been to several area quilt shops inviting them to advertise in our newsletter. There are three levels in which they can participate. Quilters Corner in Potosi, Cobblestone Cupboard in Festus, Red Rooster in Farmington, and Mad Monks in Park Hills are all participating at the three star (the highest) level. They will be donating gifts for attendance and raffle prizes and discounts to card members who show their cards. Please visit these shops and show off your membership card, and thank them for their support of our guild.
Judy Carriere informed us we now have a cabinet for our library. Several new books have been donated. Thank you Judy for all your work, and thank you members for donating those books.
Phyllis encouraged us to visit the web site which is constantly being updated with pictures and information about new shops advertising with us and offering discounts to members. The web site address is http://threadsoffriendship.bravehost.com
Lori explained the charter quilt to us which will include blocks with each members hand appliquéd and spools of thread. More information will be available in your friendship groups. Thank you, Lori, for your idea and all your work to get this going.
Discussion was made as to how to repay the Nutrition Center for allowing us to use their facility at no charge to us. It was decided that we will make a $300.00 donation from our treasury. Saturday, September 22, the center will be having a Chicken and Dumpling dinner from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. as a fund raiser. If we donate on that day the amount will be matched by Thrivent Lutheran Financial Services up to $800.
The guild decided to take part in the St. Joseph Catholic Church craft fair Saturday, November 10, as a fund raiser. The cost to us is $25.00, and we will be selling items donated by the guild. If you can help on that day please let Phyllis know.
We do not have an official beginning or ending to the membership as yet. It is all tied up in the tax exempt status, and we will be informed of that by our next meeting (hopefully).
Also, we hope to have our brochure ready soon, at least in time for the St. Joe Craft Fair.
Forthcoming, will be a budget committee and survey. The survey will be in the newsletter to be completed and returned to our next meeting, October 9.
Next month Janet Murphy will be demonstrating paper piecing, so be sure to bring your machine and your Double Diamond block with pieces you have been earning for attendance, Show and Tell, and completing the block-of-the-month.
The 50/50 winner was Vicky Barnell. The block-of-the-month winner was Carol Grix. There were several attendance prizes given out.
Saphrona Brewington demonstrated quilt binding while we all enjoyed cake and punch to celebrate our charter membership and 6 months as Threads of Friendship Quilters Guild.
Meeting was adjourned.
