BUS TO PADUCAH!

The guild voted to sponsor a bus to Paducah. The 47 passenger charter bus will leave Farmington at 6:00 a.m. and return around 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 23rd. It will travel through Fredericktown on the way to Paducah – so if you have friends in Fredericktown they can catch the bus on the way to the quilt show. The bus is $25 for guild members and $30 for non-members. We need to fill this bus so grab your friends and join in the fun! You can sign-up and pay Lori Younker, Carol Grix, or Phyllis Hargis.

CRAYON QUILT CHALLENGE

Each person entering the challenge will draw two crayons. Use one of the crayon colors for your main fabric color and the other crayon color as an accent fabric color. You may add as many other fabrics and colors as you like.

The quilt should be at least 24” by 30” or larger. You will have until May to get your quilt top completed. The quilt does not have to be quilted. Please bring your quilt and your two crayons to the May quilt guild meeting.

FRIENDSHIP GROUP BLURB

Nina Vieth’s friendship group has been busy this year meeting regularly at the Senior Center on the second Wednesday of the month at 1:00. We have enjoyed visiting and sharing ideas, patterns and laughter. Much of our time has been spent preparing for the program in January, our new Secret Quilter program, and block-of-the month in February, a heart block, of course. Before going to quilt shops in the area to choose fabric for block-of-the month, we had lunch together at Warehouse Barbeque. In January we met at Nina’s house to work on our charter quilt spool block and then enjoyed a lunch of soup, sandwiches, and dessert and a long, leisurely visit around the table.

LET US HEAR WHAT YOUR GROUP IS DOING!

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS

NEW MEMBERS

New members for February were Deanna Bayless and Jenniline Doromal. We now have a total of seventy members.

MARCH MEETING

The next meeting of the Threads of Friendship Quilters’ Guild will be March 11 at 6:30 at the Farmington Senior Center on Wallace Road behind Mineral Area Hospital.

Shortened Business Meeting

Did you notice that the business part of the last guild meeting was shorter? We plan for this trend to continue, but that means you have to read the newsletter because that is where you will learn all the guild news! Read on!!!!!

The Date Is Set! Happy New Year!!!

We have been debating and worrying about when to start the new year. The officers decided that we should just bite the bullet and get on with it! The new guild membership year will start in June. Members who joined in December, January, and February will only pay $10 for next year’s membership. Members joining in March, April, and May will pay $10. Each member will receive a $10 workshop gift certificate when she pays her dues for next year (2008-09). The gift certificates can be used toward After Meeting Workshops or Day Workshops.

Officer Nomination Committee

According to the guild’s constitution, the guild president must appoint a 3-person nomination committee in March. To create this committee, Phyllis asked each officer to submit the name of a person from her friendship group to serve on the nomination committee. At the March meeting, she’ll draw 3 names from those submitted. These 3 will comprise the nomination committee. At the April meeting the committee will present a slate of candidates for the guild offices: president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, membership, newsletter, hospitality, and member-at-large. At the May meeting, there will be opportunity for additional nominations and the membership will vote. An officer can hold the same position for no more than 2 terms.

After Meeting Workshop

Who says nobody listens? A guild member recommended that we offer “after meeting workshops.” She pointed out that on meeting nights the hard stuff was finished (the husband and kids were fed, child care was in place, everyone knew she was out for the night, etc.) so why not take advantage of the situation and offer After Meeting Workshops. So, beginning in April, we will offer a workshop after the guild meeting (8:00-10:00 p.m.).  These workshops will be cost $10. At the March meeting, you’ll learn more about this “learning opportunity” and be able to sign up for the first “After Meeting Workshop.”

Coming in the March Newsletter -- Friendship Group Blurbs

Do you want to be in the know? Do you wonder what is going on in other friendship groups? Do you wonder what a great time you missed when you didn’t make your friendship group meeting? Wonder no more! Watch for Friendship Group Blurb in each newsletter.

Block-of-the-Month and Program Unite!

After this block-of-the-month/program sequence is completed, friendship groups will do both the block-of-the-month and the program during the same month. Why? This will allow the friendship group to design a program to demonstrate quilting techniques needed for the construction of that month’s block: fabric measuring, fabric preparation, rotary cutting, piecing, squaring, pressing, seam allowance … all those essentials that make successful blocks and ultimately successful quilts. Naturally, friendship groups still have the option of offering any type of program they choose.

Wow! I Want to Learn to Make that Quilt!

How many times have you heard, thought, or said those words during Show-and-Tell? Beginning at the March meeting, look for "Let's Have a Class" forms at the member sign-in table. If you see something during show-and-tell or on the Show-and-Tell web photos that you would love to have as a class, write it down on the “Let’s Have a Class” form and turn it in at the sign-in table. We’ll do our best to offer an After Meeting Workshop or Day Workshop on exactly what you want to learn.

Collector of the Blocks

Judy Douglas saw a snag and stepped in to fix it. Friendship groups have sometimes seemed a bit overwhelmed with selling their block-of-the-month and collecting the completed blocks and giving out the raffle tickets. In comes Judy to help out. Judy has started collecting the completed blocks and handing out raffle tickets. This allows the friendship groups to sell their block kits without the additional responsibilities. Thank you Judy, our new Collector of the Blocks!

Who Are You?

Each month one or two members win the block-of-the month, but they don’t know who completed the blocks that they use to make their quilt. So, we need a list! Beginning in March, each member taking a block-of-the-month kit will sign her name. The following month, she’ll check off her name as she returns her block and gets her raffle ticket. The list of participating members will be given to the block-of-the-month winner so she’ll know who completed the blocks that make up her quilt.

HELP!

Janet, the vice president, needs help. Coming up with workshop ideas is not an easy task to do on your own. At the March meeting, Phyllis will appoint a committee of three to help her out.

Charity at Home

Are you interested in community service? Can you think of ways that the guild can help people in our community? We are looking for a very special member to search out opportunities for the guild to use our quilting hands to do good things for others. If you are interested in serving in this appointment position, please let Phyllis or one of the officers know.
