January Meeting

The next meeting of the Threads of Friendship Quilters’ Guild will be January 8, 2008 at the Farmington Senior Center behind Mineral Area Hospital on Wallace Road.

January Program

The Sun Bonnet Sues friendship group will explain and organize the Secret Quilter (Secret Pal) program. Those wishing to participate will fill out a questionnaire of personal information, then all questionnaires will be deposited into a container; and each participating member will draw a questionnaire to determine who will be her secret quilter for the coming year. Each participating member will then remember her secret quilter on special occasions throughout the year with cards or small gifts. The items will be left in a designated place before each monthly meeting and the Sunbonnet Sues group will be responsible for delivering these items to the correct recipient. At the December meeting there will be a Christmas party with gifts for secret quilters of about $15, and secret quilters for the year will be revealed.

On-Going Hand Quilting Project

Barbara V. and Phyllis H. are starting a hand quilted quilt project at the Senior Center. Until January, the quilt must be be taken in/out of the frame each quilting session, but that only takes a few minutes. Phyllis will gladly work with anyone who wants to learn to hand quilt -- just call her and arrange a time. This is an opportunity for you to learn to hand quilt! (You will need a thimble. Thread and needles are provided.)

Minutes of the December 11, 2007 meeting of Threads of Friendship Quilters Guild

President Phyllis Hargis called the meeting to order at 6:30 pm.

Show and Tell participates were; Barb Viitanen, Carol Grix, Melissa Thomas, Judy Carrier, Kay King, Judy Douglas, Phyllis Hargis, Linda Smith, Joanna Yonker, Naomi Hulsey, Linda Nickelson, Nancy Medley, Joyce White, Loretta Smith Freda Brewer, and Gayle Hughes.

There were 36 members in attendance with 2 visitors. Melissa Thomas was welcomed as our newest member. We now have 65 members.

Barbara Viitanen reported on our featured shop for December which is Helen’s Hen House (see newsletter). Barb also reported Mad Monk’s of Park Hills has some new fabrics. Cobblestone Cupboard of Festus will be having some new classes in the New Year. Quilters Corner in Potosi has gift cards for the Holidays and will be closed December 24 through January 7, 2008. Be sure to show your membership card as you visit area Quilt Shops, most offer discounts to members.

Lori Yonker reminded us of the January deadline for our Charter Member Quilt. There will be prizes for the friendship groups who have all of their blocks done by then.

Lori also reported that the total for the Craft Fair was $723.00. (Great job and Thanks to all who helped.)

Friendship group reports: Sunbonnet Sue friendship group will be meeting Wednesday, December 12. Better Late than Never are making a quilt to be raffled, more info on that later.

The minutes and treasurer’s report were both approved.

Phyllis informed us of a vacancy left by Rose Province, membership greeter. Kay King volunteered to take the position and was approved by the membership. (Thank you, Kay.)

In case of bad weather the guild decided No school/no meeting. We will try to get the word out by e-mail and the radio as well.

Guidelines for non-professional, guild-member led workshops as printed in the newsletter were discussed. It was decided to give 50% of monies collected to workshop leaders with any expenses coming out of the other 50% which will go to the guild. All other points were approved as in the newsletter.

There will be a February workshop held Saturday, February 23rd from 10 am to 2 pm. Joyce White and Phyllis Hargis will be the instructors. It will be a quilt as you go technique based on the Betty Cotton Method as seen in the December/January edition of Country Woman.

There has been some request for changes in the Block-of-the-month. All reimbursements will be handled by Lori Yonker. Please stay within the $50.00 limit and if you would like a tax-exempt letter you can get that from Lori as well. It was also recommended we have more kits available, as many as 40-45. Save any unused fabric for the winner. Please return your blocks, finished or unfinished so the winner or winners will have enough blocks to finish a complete quilt.

Phyllis auctioned off the remaining craft show items bringing in an addition $125.00(approximate).

Winners tonight:

50/50 Barb Viitanen

Block-of-the-month Carol Grix

Raffle Joyce White

Door prizes Kay Taylor,Wanda O Brien, and Gayle Hughes

Phyllis has started hand quilting a quilt at the Senior Center if you are interested in learning hand quilting or just participating in an old time quilting bee of sorts let Phyllis know. She can be here daytime or evenings and is willing to teach anyone to hand quilt.

Thank you to all who made stockings for the Senior Center. There must have been over 300 stockings made and left on Mona’s desk. What a generous group quilters are.

Meeting was adjourned followed by an ornament exchange led by the Crazy Scrappers Friendship group.
