IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS

DECEMBER MEETING

The next meeting of Threads of Friendship Quilt Guild will be December 11 at 6:30 at the Farmington Senior Center behind Mineral Area Hospital on Wallace Road.  The program will be a Christmas ornament exchange, so be sure to bring your ornament if you would like to participate.

AUCTION

The St. Joe Craft Fair booth brought in $723 for the guild - not bad for such a sort time to prepare.  There were a number of very nice items left from the craft fair. These items will be auctioned at the December meeting. Bring your cash and check books! You won’t want to miss this opportunity!

January Program

For the January program the Sun Bonnet Sues will be organizing a Secret Quilter program (like a secret pal).  Each member who wishes to participate will fill out a questionnaire listing name, important dates in your life, personal favorites, hobbies, etc.  Questionnaires will be collected and each member will draw a questionnaire sheet to determine to whom she will be a secret quilter for the coming year.  If you don't wish to participate you will not fill out a questionnaire.  If you will not be at the January meeting, but you do wish to participate, please call or e-mail Nina Vieth to give her your information.

Challenge

In January we will start a “challenge” to be completed by the March meeting. Stay tuned for more information!

DEADLINE FOR CHARTER MEMBER HANDS!

The official deadline for charter member hands is the January meeting. The spools should also be completed. Lori is considering several options for putting the charter hands and spools together because some friendship groups have fewer than 8 members and other have more than 8 members. Regardless, the charter hand quilt will show the friendship that we are trying to develop.

UPDATE: CLASSES/WORKSHOPS/RETREATS

The executive committee spent a lot of time discussing classes, workshops, and retreats. We are scheduling the first workshop for February.

In March or April, we hope to offer a “Multiple Choice Saturday” so that quilters will be able to choose a class from several offerings. Please discuss class ideas within your friendship groups so that the officers have an idea of your needs/desires. The officers talked about cutting, squaring, bordering, and binding; a mystery quilt project; “Call Me quilt; and EQ6.

We will be contacting a number of outside teachers in hopes of scheduling workshops. We talked about contacting Rita Whaley for an all-day mystery quilt; Linda Carlson from Mexico, MO to teach her 4-block quilt technique; Phyllis Vandergriff, author of Snowed In and a number of individual patterns; and other Missouri quilters. Again, if you have ideas for outside teachers, please talk to the officer in your friendship group so that we can explore additional possibilities.

We are also looking into a UFO Saturday Retreat and a weekend retreat. If you have ideas, please share them!

RECOMMENDATION: GUIDELINES FOR WORKSHOPS

The following recommendation will be voted on at the December meeting:

a. Fees for non-professional, guild member led workshops:  members will pay $20 for a 3-4 hour class / non-members pay $35.

b. Classes will have a minimum of 10 participants and a maximum of 25

c. Fees will be paid in advance and are non-refundable unless some one else fills the spot

d. Non-professional, guild member teachers will be paid $50 per 3-4 hour class. Any funds collected in excess of the teacher fees will go to the guild.

e. Kits may be available for an additional cost.

FEBRUARY 2008 WORKSHOP SCHEDULED

Our first workshop will be based on the Betty Cotton method as seen in January 2008 edition of Country Woman magazine. We’ll have a couple of samples of this technique at the December meeting. We have several guild members who have experience with this method. Hopefully, we’ll announce the teacher(s) at the December meeting, and by January we’ll have a sample of the table runner and/or placemats that will be taught at the workshop.

The workshop will be on February 23 (Saturday) from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. See Lori to sign-up and pay for the workshop. The February meeting is the deadline for signing up and paying. If there is bad weather, the class will be rescheduled.

Quilt Shop in Review –
December 2007

Helen’s Hen House

Helen's Hen House is located at 180 Dunn Road, Florissant, MO 63031 (314-837-7661) Opened Mon. - Sat. 10AM - 4PM

Atop a Florissant, Missouri hill stands a turn-of-the-century mansion, which houses Helen’s Hen House. This shop is quite different from the norm. Helen’s carries many wools, home spuns, felted wool, Americana, flannels, and folk cottons.

Shoppers have different experiences as they move from room to room because each room has its own flair and focus. One room contains unique patterns, appliqué and felted piecework.   Another, the pattern room, offers examples of cute rabbits, silly snowmen, festive birds, bright stars and stripes, lovely flowers, and many, many stimulating ideas. But, what ever you do, don’t forget to look up! You don’t want to miss the abundance of wonderful sample quilts, table runners, placemats, and other fabric crafts that adorn the walls. I'm sure you will enjoy finding something you haven't seen before at Helen’s Hen House.

The new owner of Helen's Hen House, Christy Starr, is eager for Threads of Friendship members to visit her shop. She will give you a 15% discount on your purchases this month (December) provided you show your guild card. She also has a punch card with no expiration. It is completed when you have spent $133.00.  At that time, you are eligible for $20.00 worth of merchandise.  Although she only punches the card for non-sale purchases, this is not a bad thing because sale items are usually 50% off.

There is a yarn shop upstairs. This is not part of Helen’s Hen House. They did not agree to any discount. I tried! Sorry!

Directions: From I-55 take I-270 north toward Kansas City. Remain on I-270 north for approximately 3 miles after the I-70 interchange. Just after the I-70 interchange, take exit 26b (N Hanley/Graham Rd).  At the bottom of the ramp, move to the left turn lane, turn left, stay in the left turn lane as you go under the overpass, and turn left at the light – Dunn Road-West.  The driveway to Helen’s Hen House is near the top of the hill just as the right lane ends.
